Key takeaway: The gown was custom Ralph Lauren in embroidered silk chiffon with hand-applied glass beads. To get the look, start with the colour, a soft sage green, and a long, light silhouette with a bare back or shoulders.

Elle Fanning wore one of the softest looks at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14, 2026: a custom Ralph Lauren gown in a pale green that reports described as sage, somewhere between jade and pistachio.

What she wore

The dress was cut like a slip, sleeveless and close to the body, in embroidered silk chiffon with hand-applied micro-cut glass beads that made the whole surface shimmer. The back was open, and a tassel attached at the shoulder trailed down to the floor behind her.

She wore Cartier jewellery with it. Hola noted the rest of the styling: straight blonde hair worn down and a bold red lip, the one strong colour in an otherwise pale look.

Why it works

The colour does most of the talking. Sage green is rare enough on a red carpet to stand out without being loud. On a night when most of the best-dressed lists were filled with silver, gold and red, a muted green was the unexpected choice.

Because the shade is so soft, the dress can carry beading over its whole surface and still look delicate. The same amount of beading in black or in a bright colour would read as much heavier.

The red lip is the detail worth copying. A pale dress with pale makeup can fade in photographs. One point of strong colour near the face gives the whole look a centre, and it is a far easier trick to borrow than a custom gown.

How to wear the idea

The gown was made for her, so there is no exact piece to buy. To get the look, choose the colour first: a muted sage or pistachio green, not emerald and not mint. Hold the fabric near your face in daylight before you decide, because soft greens shift a great deal between warm and cool light.

Then keep the shape long and light. A bias-cut slip, a column in chiffon or a strapless maxi in a fine mesh all give the same airy effect, especially with bare shoulders or an open back. If the dress has an open back, plan the underwear before the day and not on it.

Keep the accessories pale and simple. Fine drop earrings, shoes in a nude or soft metallic tone, a small bag. Then add the one strong note, as she did: a red or deep berry lip.

Where it works best

This is an especially good formula for a spring or summer wedding guest outfit, where black can feel too heavy and white is not an option. Sage is far enough from ivory to be safe at a wedding, and it suits both daytime and evening ceremonies. For a daytime event choose chiffon or georgette; for the evening, satin or a fabric with a little beading.

What to avoid

Soft green is easily overwhelmed. Black shoes and a black bag weigh it down, and heavy gold jewellery turns it from delicate to busy. Avoid a shade so pale that it could be mistaken for ivory in photographs if you are wearing it to a wedding.
