Mariska Hargitay's Red Monse Gown at the 2026 Emmys: Get the Look
The Emmys host arrived in fire-engine-red sequins. What she wore, and how to wear a red evening gown at any age.

Mariska Hargitay hosted the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14, 2026, the first woman to host the ceremony in 15 years, and she dressed for the job. She arrived at the Peacock Theater in a fire-engine-red Monse gown covered in sequins.
What she wore
The dress had a sweetheart neckline with an off-the-shoulder strap detail and a fitted silhouette that broke into a fringed, feather-like mermaid skirt and a sweeping train. Hola described it as a fiery red off-the-shoulder gown drenched in sequins. She wore red heels to match and her hair in tousled waves.
She walked the carpet with her daughter Amaya, who wore a matching red sequined dress. It was only the first outfit of the night. Hello! counted twelve looks over the course of the broadcast, among them a ruched black gown with gold embellishment, a pink sequined dress and a trouser suit for a musical number.
Why it works
Red is the most confident colour there is for evening, and this dress commits to it completely. One colour from neckline to hem, and from the dress to the shoes. Matching the heels to the gown keeps the line unbroken all the way to the floor.
The shape is disciplined too. A clean fitted line runs through the body and all of the drama is saved for the hem, where the fringe and the train begin. The off-the-shoulder neckline frames the face and the collarbones, and with a neckline like that, no necklace is needed.
It was also the right dress for the job. A host has to be found instantly in a wide shot of a crowded carpet, and nothing does that like a single block of red.
How to wear the idea
The gown itself is a runway-level piece, but the idea translates well. Look for a true red, not burgundy or coral, in a fitted column or mermaid shape with a defined waist. A strapless or off-the-shoulder neckline is closest to the original.
If you want the sparkle as well, choose a sequined or rhinestone fabric in a single colour and keep the shape simple. If sequins feel like too much, a matte red crepe in the same cut gives the same confidence and is easier to wear to a wedding or a formal dinner.
Red needs very little help. Skip the necklace and wear earrings only. For shoes there are two good answers: red to match, as she did, which makes the outfit look deliberate, or a nude or metallic tone, which is easier to find and lets the dress stand alone.
Where it works best
A red evening dress is at its best at a gala, a winter party or a black tie event. At a wedding it is acceptable in most places, but it does draw the eye, so choose a calmer fabric, matte instead of sequined, and check whether the couple's culture gives red a particular meaning.
What to avoid
Black shoes and a black bag make red look heavy, and a red lip in a slightly different red can clash with the dress, so either match it carefully or keep the lips neutral. Avoid mixing reds across the outfit. And do not add a second strong colour: red works because it is alone.
